The SFB 676 has been funded by the DFG from 2006 to 2018. The project was completed with a special colloquium in June 2018. A book with the scientific results of the SFB 676 has been published in September 2018.

J. Haller and M. Grefe (eds.), “Particles, Strings and the Early Universe: The Structure of Matter and Space-Time,” Hamburg (2018), DOI: 10.3204/PUBDB-2018-00782.

Many research directions developed within the SFB 676 will be continued within the Cluster of Excellence "Quantum Universe" starting 1 January 2019.

Student Council

The Student Council is the official representation of the PhD students within the graduate school (IRTG – Integrated Research Training Group). It consists of up to six students from the different SFB research projects (A, B and C) and is elected every year by a general assembly of all IRTG members.

Some of the duties/tasks of the Student Council are:

  • to foster communication and exchange among IRTG students, both professional and informal;

  • to serve as a contact point for student concerns that require discussion within the IRTG;

  • to represent the student body in IRTG activities and organizational matters within the SFB;

  • the evaluation of IRTG teaching activities;

  • the organization of “PhD Days”, a day-long “mini-conference” and social events for and by IRTG students

Travel Funds

The SFB-676 IRTG Student Council is able to fund research travels of PhD students of the SFB-676 IRTG. The money will be used to support the students to attend interesting educational activities. The purpose of this support is to broaden the student’s scientific horizon in a direction which is not topic of her/his research. We have set up the following priorities regarding the extra funding:

  • The programme should have a connection to SFB-676-related research.
  • The number of supported students shall be maximized.
  • Educational activities with higher benefit to cost ratio will be preferred.

This list should be understood as a guiding principle. Every application will be considered. Applications are invited throughout the year until September 30th. The council will meet on a regular basis to agree upon the distribution of funding.

In order to apply please complete this form and send it to sfb676-studentcouncil@desy.de (or to Anne Ernst in 2a/207).

PhD Days

The SFB 676 PhD-days is a short workshop aimed to stimulate discussion and collaboration between the students of the different projects. Besides lecture courses given by highly experienced speakers, PhD students will get the opportunity to present and discuss their own work related to the SFB research topics.

Practical Information

For easy communication between the IRTG students, we have created the mailing list sfb676-irtg@desy.de. If you are not a member of this list, please get your supervisor (PI in the SFB) to nominate you for the IRTG and then subscribe.

All kinds of social activities are announced via the mailing list theory-fellows-students@desy.de, which you can subscribe to here.

The current elected members of the Student Council of the IRTG are:

  • Anne Ernst (speaker)

  • Yannick Linke

  • Vincent Rothe

The Student Council serves mainly as contact persons for the IRTG coordinator, Gudrid Moortgat-Pick. Any concerns and inquiries are very welcome and should be addressed to sfb676-studentcouncil@desy.de

In case you have any problems which are related to your Ph.D. or activities within the IRTG, e.g., searching for feasible supervisors, questions concering application procedures and Ph.D. regulations, or even personal problems with your supervisor, the student council can act as contact person and mediator. Don’t hesitate to contact us!
