B11 – Top-quark Physics at the LHC
This project is concerned with the heaviest known elementary particle, the top quark. The major part of the project aims at increasing the precision of the theoretical predictions of the top quark within the Standard Model of Particle Physics, particularly its mass and its production cross section and distributions at hadron colliders. Especially the top quark mass is of great interest due to its influence on the stability of the ground state of the electroweak theory and the lifetime of the universe. For these very accurate predictions, second and third order calculations in perturbation theory with massive degrees of freedom at the forefront of theoretical calculations are needed.
In the second part of the project, making use of the precise predictions of the first part, possible deviations in the properties of the top quark from those in the Standard Model are investigated. It is studied whether such deviations can be accessed at the Large Hadron Collider or future colliders, and how such deviations can be translated to possible new physics scenarios.
